~ Mr. Waternoose

Henry J. Waternoose, III, Mr. Waternoose, or simply just Waternoose, is the secondary antagonist of Disney/Pixar's Monsters, Inc., and a cameo character in Monsters University, He is the former CEO of Monsters, Inc, Mike and Sulley's former boss and one of Randall's former henchmen.

He is voiced by the late James Coburn.

Biography[]

Monsters University[]

Waternoose didn't appear physically in the film, but he is seen in a photo greeting Mike and Sulley to Monsters, Inc.

Monsters, Inc[]

He was originally a very friendly old man who wanted power if the kids the monsters scare scream. He wanted James P. Sullivan to help him out on the work to show other monsters what it takes to be a top scarer. After he found out Boo was the child the CDA are looking for, he decided to join Randall's side and banish Mike and Sulley to the Himalayas, where they meet the Abominable Snowman. He is later seen in Randall's top secret lair, kidnapping Boo along with Randall and Fungus. Sulley comes in roaring, rescuing Boo. Waternoose realizes he's trying to save Boo, much to his anger, in which he tells Randall to finish him off. After the two defeat Randall and banish him to the human world, Mr. Waternoose is later seen with the CDA. He then chases Sulley down after the CDA chase Mike carrying the purple monster suit Boo wore. When he comes into the door, he gets into negotiation with Sulley arguing about Boo. Mike becomes rather amused when he hears him saying "I'll kidnap thousands of children before I let this company die!", after the CDA hear him three times, they arrest him.

Personality[]

Waternoose originally had a father-like personality to Sulley, admiring his enhanced skill at scaring children and being the top scarer. He became extremely evil, cruel and abusive sadly after Sulley tried to save Boo from him, Randall, and Fungus.

Trivia[]

  • He appeared very briefly in the film's prequel, Monsters University, in a photo only. He is seen with an afro and facial hair while shaking hands with Mike and Sulley, welcoming them to Monsters, Inc. Interestingly, after the death of his original voice, James Coburn, Kelsey Grammer was going to portray Mr. Waternoose's voice, but was dropped out for some reason.
  • Mr. Waternoose is one of the last characters to be played by James Coburn before his death in 2002.
  • In the early treatment of the first film, Waternoose is shown to have tentacles rather than crab-like legs as well as having seven/nine eyes rather than five. His name is also never revealed and was refer as "The Boss".
  • Mr. Waternoose is often thought to be the first film's main antagonist and Randall's former boss. This is not true as the film shows that Randall is the mastermind behind of the evil plot and not Waternoose (despite Waternoose ordering Randall a few times).
